Overview

Caulino Ceramics is a renowned ceramics studio and shop in the historic heart of Lisbon, nestled in the atmospheric streets near the castle. Founded in 2002 by Cátia Pessoa—a designer with a background in interior design who turned her passion for clay into a celebrated career—the studio has become a reference point for handcrafted contemporary ceramics in Portugal. Caulino is celebrated for its workshops and creative works, displaying exclusive pieces by recognised ceramists alongside collections by emerging artisans who develop their craft through the studio's programmes. The space beautifully bridges contemporary design with the Portuguese tradition of handcrafted ceramics, creating an elegant and comfortable environment where attention to detail is paramount. Cátia Pessoa has collaborated with some of Portugal's finest chefs, including José Avillez and David Jesus of Belcanto (two Michelin stars), creating bespoke tableware, and has developed interior projects for prestigious venues such as Bairro do Avillez, Quinta das Murças, and Lamego Hotel & Life. The studio offers private workshops for small groups (minimum 2 people, €80/person for 2 hours) and an Open Studio membership programme for autonomous ceramists and dedicated beginners—a co-working model offering 12 to 40 hours monthly access to a fully equipped atelier with worktables, storage, tools, glazes, and kiln firings included. Note that Caulino focuses exclusively on handbuilding techniques; wheel throwing is not available. Whether you're seeking to purchase unique ceramic pieces, learn the craft in an inspiring setting, or join a community of passionate makers, Caulino offers an authentic Lisbon ceramics experience.
