Nu Cerâmica is a handbuilding ceramics studio founded in September 2021 by designer Maria de Almeida e Paiva in São Domingos de Rana, Cascais. After studying design at the University of Lisbon, volunteering as a teacher in Cambodia, and working in design studios in Milan, Maria completed a course in design applied to ceramics in Caldas da Rainha and transformed her passion into a business. The brand name "nu" (meaning "naked" in Portuguese) embodies its core values: something undressed, simple, natural, true and exposed—exactly how Maria believes life should be. The studio offers beginner-friendly handbuilding workshops where participants learn two fundamental techniques: the pinch (ball) technique and the slab technique. Each person creates as many pieces as time allows, decorating them with decals, relief work, or engobe painting. All pieces are fired and glazed with transparent glaze, ready for pickup 3-5 weeks later. Workshops accommodate 5-10 participants (adults and children 6+), with gift vouchers available. The studio also sells unique handmade tableware—mugs, coffee cups, and bowls—designed for everyday rituals and slow living. Supported by Cascais Municipality's Young Talent Promotion programme.
